Our partner Design Clips conducted a pilot of the “My Hood” desktop app with a group of teenagers from the 8th High School of Kalamaria in Thessaloniki, Greece. The activity was integrated into the school’s environmental and educational activities. Four enthusiastic teenagers joined us for a guided neighborhood walk to observe and document their surroundings.
During the walk, the students noted down their impressions of the area, evaluating public spaces across the four categories. At the end of the activity, they had the opportunity to test the My Hood desktop app for the first time. At the end of the day, they shared their experience of using the digital mapping tool with their classmates.
What Did We Learn?
The participants were excited to use the desktop app and provided positive feedback on its design and navigation experience. They particularly enjoyed how the activity encouraged them to explore their neighborhood, imagining ways to improve and utilize the spaces in their daily lives as well as discovering new places to hang out with friends! One key suggestion they made was to develop a mobile version of the app for easier access.
Insightful Observations
The students shared several noteworthy comments about their neighborhood:
Teachers’ Feedback
The teachers were thrilled to see their students engaging with such a hands-on educational tool. They expressed interest in using “My Hood” digital mapping tool for future activities, recognizing its potential to inspire young people to actively engage with their urban environment.
What’s Next?
This pilot marks an important milestone in refining the “My Hood” digital tool. The feedback we receive will help us improve the desktop app and enhance usability. We’re excited to conduct further pilots and continue empowering young people to shape their neighborhoods!
Stay tuned for more pilots!
